Background

A subsidiary of a major railroad company provides new and used car shippers with a robust and responsive auto transport network to handle both local and long-distance auto shipments via truck and rail.

Challenge

In an increasingly web-based and customer-driven market, providing web access to services is expected. The auto shipping subsidiary provided quoting and ordering services via a web-based application or by contact with a designated account representative. To improve customer service and reduce costs, the client wanted to mobilize its existing application and deploy this app on three mobile platforms: Apple iPhone, Android and Blackberry. The shipping subsidiary’s goals were to gain relevance in the mobile space, reach a wider audience and reduce stress on its internal sales force by making relevant information available to buyers through a mobile device. This approach would directly reduce costs by increasing the number of accounts a sales representative could support.

Solution

ProKarma developed and implemented an end-to-end native mobile solution that enabled do-it-yourself quoting for buyers, reducing unnecessary involvement with sales representatives and streamlining the sales process. ProKarma provided initial consulting services to help define mobile strategy and determined that a native application would be the best solution. ProKarma refined the requirements definition and identified the intended user experience through wireframing and user journeys. Using a multi-shore distributed Agile model for design, development and deployment, ProKarma designed different user interfaces for each mobile platform, leveraging the unique features of each. This improved customer service and increased the accuracy of quotes and orders for the company’s clients.

Release 2.0 of the mobile application included real-time vehicle identification number (VIN) scanning capability for retrieving information about the car. ProKarma developed this functionality to solve unique challenges, including adjustments for climate conditions, such as sun glare, that could affect the readability of the scanned VIN.
